A restoration of F.A. Rinehardts Vapore, the Maricopa originally lived along the lower Colorado River. However, due to conflicts with neighboring tribes, such as the Mojave and Yuma, they migrated eastward and settled along the Gila River around the 16th and 17th centuries. Here, they allied with the Akimel O’odham for mutual protection and support.
